In Adolescents’ Words:
Thirteen adolescents participated in a PHOTOVOICE PROJECT – Our World Through Our Eyes – in 2006.
The objective of photovoice is to use photographic images taken by persons with little money, power or status (like adolescents) to empower them and to catalyze change by informing policy makers of the population’s assets and needs. For more information, visit: http://www.photovoice.com.
This project, a precursor to Planting Magic Beans, provided participants the opportunity to express through their photographs and words what they think about the issues that affect their health, well-being and sexuality. Participants also gave a presentation and created an exhibit at the local municipality.
The project also cemented the adolescents’ and co-founders’ understanding of adolescent needs in peripheral areas of Lima.

Our Communities:
We began our work in San Juan de Miraflores, located in the southern cone of Lima. We work specifically in Pampas de San Juan, a group of 46 different human settlements. All of our current scholarship recipients are from this community.
We also currently work in Los Olivos, located in the northern cone of Lima. We work specifically in the human settlement Juan Pablo II. All of our non-scholarship activities are currently in this community.
As often as we are able, we also carry out activities to bring the youth participants from the two communities together. |
